The purpose of this letter is to comment on the paint job performed by Dave Olen and his team on our vacation home at 231 Leelanau, Frankfort. We purchased our hose in July 1999, which was built in 1869. We spent over a year restoring the inside and during that time we contacted 8 painting contractors to give us their assessment of how they would propose to restore the glamour of our Victorian “lady”. Dave Olen was by far the most knowledgeable and professional on what needed to be done. The previous owner held the property for 25 years and always painted it white with either blue or green on the window trim. Very boring and not fitting for a proud old lady.

Dave and his team did an outstanding job preparing the wood surface by carefully applying a power wash, followed by scrapping and sanding as needed. We also contracted with a local builder to replace boards and Dave worked with the builder to keep everything coordinated and on schedule. This was made possible only through the vast amount of equipment that Dave brings to the job, particularly scaffolding and ladders of all sizes. Dave and his team can reach heights that would deter many other painters. Yet they are very careful and use safety equipment regularly. They are also very neat and use canvas covers. The application of the color coat was a thing of beauty to watch. Dave not only helped us settle on a color scheme, but he also gave us a real education on what works and what doesn’t. Our color scheme consists of 5 colors that compliment one another. The base color is very pleasant (medium green) and it blends nicely with the surrounding environment. The different colors used on the windows and all the varying types of trim provide beautiful but tasteful contrast with the base. All the elegant trim that had been buried for years under a monocoat treatment are now noticeable. People who have walked by the house for years said they never knew such detail existed on the house. People stop their cars right in the middle of the street and take pictures of the house. We have had so many compliments that we have stopped counting.

We have owned a number of homes for 45 years and Dave is the best painter I have ever used or been acquainted with. The is no-one better at color selection, color placement, and quality application. I highly recommend Dave and his company for your painting needs. I have you with only one piece of advice: — listen to Dave on color selection. There is a big difference on what may appeal to you on a color chip and how that color turns out on a house.
